SW News: The Zimbabwe Catholic Bishops Conference is calling the civilians in the African country to unite and remain resolute ahead of the upcoming elections on August 23. Through a statement, the bishops cautioned the faithful against allowing the elections to cause divisions in the country.

The prelates described the upcoming polls in which the President, Members of Parliament, and Councilors are to be elected as a landmark in Zimbabwe’s history. Encouraging all to exercise their democratic rights, the bishops urged the people to unite despite their ideological differences.

“We would like to encourage all citizens to make this election different: let it be characterized by peace. Critical, defining, and determining as these elections are, the contest for the highest office in the land, and other offices, should not divide us as a nation,” they said.

The Catholic Church leaders added, “As we participate in this exercise of common discernment, let us remember who we are: children of God imbued with human dignity. Let that dignity shine forth as we make our choices in peace.”

The bishops further called the politicians to be responsible in utterances, and they should avoid using inflammatory, politically charged, and derogatory language. They cautioned the politicians that they would be judged in the future if the country suffered any division. And the prelates also reminded the leaders that it would make it difficult to govern a divided nation.

They also appeal to the media in the country to stand up for peace-building.
