SW News: Pope Francis' visit to the Democratic Republic of the Congo or DRC, which is scheduled to start at the end of this month, is an indication of his consideration for and solidarity with the Christian population in the Central African nation, according to the country's Minister of Communication and Media. Patrick Muyaya Katembwe, speaking to journalists, about preparations for the January 31–February 3 papal visit, said it is truly a historic one.
The last visit was in 1985. The spokesperson stated that the event will symbolize many things because the Pope is closely monitoring the situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and he frequently speaks about the need for peace in the region.
The Holy Father will begin the first leg of his two-nation African tour in Kinshasa, where he will celebrate Holy Mass, meet with young people, Catholic Bishops, and Jesuits in the DRC, as well as with representatives of charitable organizations and victims of the conflict in the country's eastern region.
Minister Muyaya expressed his government’s delight to organize the Pontiff's visit. He said that it is also a show of solidarity with the Congolese people who have long been battered by war. The Minister indicated that everything will be ready for the Holy Father's arrival and added that the various commissions are wrapping up their preparations for the visit.
According to the DRC government spokesperson, "The Democratic Republic of Congo is known for its feeling of hospitality to the Congolese population and reserves, a warm greeting to the Pontiff."
Meanwhile, the country has declared Rwanda's shooting of one of its fighter jets as an "act of war", amid mounting tensions. Rwanda's government said it took "defensive measures" against a plane that had violated its airspace - a claim denied by DR Congo.
