SW News: Decrying the tragic death of several migrants in Texas, Archbishop of San Antonio Gustavo García-Siller has urged the officials "not to pass by" the migrants' issues. Speaking to Vatican News, the prelate called for more humane affection towards the migrants who risk their life for a better future.

Addressing the deaths as a terrible incident the Archbishop stated, "This is the story of the immigrants, migrants, and refugees on the southern border with the US." Following the tragic incident, the Archbishop had offered prayers for the victims. He further assured his closeness to the survivors and the affected. Pope Francis also offered his prayers for the victims.

On Monday, June 27, an abandoned tractor-trailer containing 46 dead migrants was found on the back road of San Antonio city. The death toll has now gone up to 53. Although their identities and countries of origin were not immediately established, authorities indicated the victims were illegal migrants who had crossed the Mexican border into the United States. They claimed the truck was used by a smuggling ring. San Antonio was also the site of a similar incident in 2017 in which 10 migrants died in a similar condition.

Archbishop Gustavo also presided over a Eucharistic celebration on Thursday, June 30, to remember the victims. Auxiliary Bishops Michael Boulette and Gary Janak will also concelebrate the Holy Mass at the Cathedral of San Fernando. According to a spokesperson, Jordan McMorrough, the service featured a procession from the cathedral's Main Plaza having a special crucifix, candles, and flags honoring the survivors and the nations of those who died of suffocation in the stifling heat in the container.
