Republican Congress members propose bill to tighten parental control over kids’ education

SW News: According to Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, the Parents’ Bill of Rights upholds their right to know what is being taught in schools, the right to be heard, the right to have a look at the budget of the school, the right to protect the privacy of their child and the right to be informed of violence that takes place on campus.
McCarthy said, “One thing we know in this country is that education is the great equalizer and we want the parents to be empowered.” He added that the bill was introduced because parents are being prosecuted by schools for inquiring about educational content. He was citing the example of Nicole Solas of Rhode Island who is being sued by a union of teachers because she demanded to know what her child was learning in kindergarten.
Citing Sola’s case, McCarthy said, "They sued you for asking what's being taught to your child? You are the exact reason why we have the Parents' Bill of Rights."
The bill was sponsored by Republican member of Congress from Louisiana Julia Letlow. She said that the pandemic lockdown revealed what was actually being shown in schools. Many parents were appalled to know that their children were learning LGBTQ agenda, Critical Race Theory among others, she said.
"And so then we did the right thing, we went to our School Boards and we voiced our displeasure but we were turned away and some of us were even labeled domestic terrorists – that was absolutely not right," Letlow said. "That was the impetus for this bill. And thanks to all of you, the parents in this room, for stepping up and saying enough is enough," she said.
