SCOTUS says probe to identify culprit behind draft opinion leak ended in fiasco

SW News: The Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) has revealed that the probe into the leak of a draft opinion of justices in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization last year could not identify the culprit.

SCOTUS made this announcement on January 19 in a statement jointly issued with the marshal of the court. It said that the investigation could not spot the culprit although it concluded by saying it was unlikely that the court was hacked.

The statement said, “It is not possible to determine the identity of any individual who may have disclosed the document or how the draft opinion ended up with Politico.” It was in May last year that the draft opinion of justices was leaked. The draft revealed that they had decided to repeal Roe v Wade, which had legalized abortion way back in 1973. After Politico carried the leaked document, there was heated debate about abortion across the country and it also triggered a wave of attacks on churches and pro-life pregnancy centers in several states.

There were also threats to the lives of Supreme Court justices and there were agitations outside their residences. There was also an assassination bid against Justice Brett Kavanaugh in June last year.

In the statement, the top court of the country said, “In May 2022, this Court suffered one of the worst breaches of trust in its history: the leak of a draft opinion. The leak was no mere misguided attempt at protest. It was a grave assault on the judicial process.”

It was Chief Justice John Roberts who ordered the marshal of the Supreme Court to undertake a probe into the leak of the document. The statement says that the marshal undertook 126 formal interviews of 97 staff members. However, all of them denied any involvement in leaking the document.
