SW News: The US Postal Services (USPS) announced that their new holiday stamp under the Forever Stamp collection will be featuring the “Virgin and Child” Italian painting. The stamp showing the Blessed Mother and the Infant Jesus will be released on Thursday, September 22 in Massachusetts at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
The release comes just a few months before Christmas. The oil-on-panel painting depicted on the stamp dates back to the 16th century and it is believed that the unknown painter must have been from Florence in Italy. Art historians have named the painter "the Master of Scandicci Lamentation".
In this painting, the Virgin Mary is holding her Son and looking down at him tenderly. "One of her arms holding him protectively at his waist, the other tenderly touching his arm, while the Christ child turns his head to look out of the frame to the left," said the USPS in a press release.
The release will be held under the auspices of Jenny Utterback, the USPS’s Vice President for Organizational Development. For those who wish to purchase the stamp, it is available at all local post offices as well as online.
Other than the “Virgin and Child” stamp, they also have a new collection of the holiday stamp titled "Holiday Elves” which will also be released next month.
Last year, the US Postal Service came out with Forever stamps in October titled "A Visit From St Nick" and "Otters in Snow" under the category of Forever Stamps.
In four different visuals, the Christmas Eve sojourn of Santa Claus was featured in the 20-stamp booklet. It showed Father Christmas going with this bag of toys on a roof and another one depicted him with his feet close to a fireplace. Yet another one showed him flying away on his sleigh drawn by reindeer.
