US stresses Human Rights focus in talks with India prior to President Biden's trip

SW News: In light of President Joe Biden's imminent visit to Delhi, India, for the G20 summit, the US State Department Spokesperson, Matthew Miller, has emphasized that the matter of human rights has been an ongoing focus in discussions with India and will remain a prominent subject of conversation moving forward. The president is slated to visit India next month.
During a press conference on Monday, there were questions regarding reports of human rights violations in India, specifically highlighting instances of "Christian abuse." In response to the question, Miller, speaking on behalf of Biden, emphasized that the administration has consistently expressed its stance against the mistreatment of Christians and other religious groups globally.
The government led by the nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in India is currently facing scrutiny from opponents and human rights groups due to concerns regarding its treatment of minorities, specifically Muslims and Christians. These minority groups have reportedly been targeted in hate crimes and incidents of vigilante violence, prompting increased attention and criticism of the PM Narendra Modi-led government.
In a recent development, a US-based analytical group has released research urging the Biden administration to contemplate categorizing India as a "Country of Particular Concern" (CPC). The findings were unveiled earlier this month, shedding light on potential recommendations for the US government.
India has strongly criticized the report, accusing it of being "biased" and "motivated." In a statement provided by Arindam Bagchi, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Commission has expressed strong condemnation towards the dissemination of factually inaccurate content that has the potential to undermine the credibility of the US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF). Additionally, the Commission has recommended that USCIRF thoroughly investigate the rich and inclusive culture of India.
