SW News: One hundred and eighteen-year-old French nun Sister Andre, who had been considered as the world’s oldest living person, has passed away. David Tavella, the spokesman of the Sainte-Catherine-Laboure nursing home in Toulon, where the nun lived, confirmed the news.
"There is great sadness but... it was her desire to join her beloved brother. For her, it's a liberation," he told AFP. Hubert Falco, the mayor of Toulon, expressed sadness over the death of Sister Andre on his Twitter page.
Andre became the world’s oldest person on April 19, 2022, following the death of Japanese woman Kane Tanaka, who died at the age of 119. Sister Andre, whose real name is Lucile Randon, was born on February 11, 1904, in Alès, France.
A convert to Catholicism from Protestantism, she joined the Daughters of Charity congregation in 1944 to become a nun. In 2021, just before her 117th birthday, it was announced that she had recovered from Covid-19.
