Bishops demand investigation into Filipino deaths in Saudi Arabia
News Desk
Wednesday, 01 Jul 2020
SW News: The Catholic Church in the Philippines is calling upon the country’s government to investigate the recent deaths of more than 350 Filipino workers in Saudi Arabia. While the Filipino ambassador to the Arab kingdom claims the deaths were largely due to natural causes, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines say they are not convinced by that explanation. Bishop Ruperto Santos, who is head of the Bishops’ Conference’s Commission on Migrants and Itinerant People believes there is, “something wrong with the whole picture.” Hence, he is now demanding a government investigation. He is being supported in that demand by Migrante International, an alliance of organizations that fights for the welfare of Filipino workers overseas. They fear that the overwhelmingly Catholic Filipinos, including those with COVID-19, are being discriminated against by the Saudi healthcare system due to them not being Muslims. The Saudi government denies that suggestion. The Philippine economy depends heavily on overseas Filipino workers. Last year, migrant workers produced 9 per cent of the Philippines gross domestic product.
