Trivandrum:
Jose Thayil, a medical doctor, was ordained to the priesthood in the Indian state of Kerala for the Vincentian congregation. The ordination ceremony officiated by Faridabad Auxiliary Bishop Jose Puthenveetil took place at Marymatha Provincial House on December 26. Fr. Thayil, born to devout Catholic parents Paulochan and Rani, experienced a pivotal moment during his high school years when his family met with a car accident. Thayil was seriously injured and the exceptional care given by the doctor who treated him sparked a desire within him to pursue a career in medicine.
Thayil didn't have any desire to become a priest until he participated in various retreats during high school, which ignited his aspiration to preach the Good News. During his preparation for the medical entrance examination, he attended lectures by P.C. Thomas, a renowned physics professor. There, he came to know about certain doctors who went on to become priests. This information convinced him that fulfilling his desire to become a priest alongside his medical profession was achievable.
He fervently prayed that if he obtained the opportunity to study medicine with government-allocated funds, it would be a divine sign for him to pursue both medicine and priesthood. He did not want to burden his family with the heavy tuition fees. Thayil's prayer was answered. He passed the entrance examination and received the opportunity to study with government funding.
Throughout high school and medical studies, his involvement with Jesus Youth, an international Catholic movement, revitalized his faith. After completing his graduation in medicine, Thayil made the courageous decision to embark on seminary formation. When he shared this decision with his parents, they were initially shocked but ultimately gave their blessing.
Fr. Thayil shared with SW News that he had to face some opposition when he decided to become a priest after his medical studies. However, Thayil's brother Philip and a close friend provided unwavering support. Fr. Thayil said that he never regretted his choice to answer Christ's call.
