Philippines Celebrates 500 Years of Faith
News Desk
Friday, 13 Mar 2020
SW News: The Catholic diocese of Borongan is preparing for the Quincentenary celebrations to commemorate the arrival of Christianity in Philippines by ringing church bells. After the Angelus at 12 noon on March 17, 2020 church bells in all parishes and chaplaincies will be rung marking the beginning of celebrations. The archdiocese said that the ringing of the church bells will be an opportune moment to emphasise the centrality of worship, of faith, and the ever-present and urgent challenge to ‘live Christ and to share Christ’ in the various circumstances of our day. Along with Mass which will be celebrated at the Immaculate Conception Parish Church in Guiuan town on 16 March, Bishop Crispin Varquez will launch the celebration logo and theme song. The church will also conduct lectures and exhibitions as part of the 2021 jubilee celebrations. On 17th March, the Bishop will travel to the Island of Homonhon, the birthplace of Christianity in Philippines and celebrate Holy Eucharist with the faithful. It was with the arrival of the Portuguese traveler, Ferdinand Magellan, that Christianity reached the costs of Easter Samar’s Homonhon island on March 17,1521.
