SW News: The civil war in Syria claimed the lives of at least 3,825 people in 2022, as per the report of the UK-based NGO Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

This number is the lowest since the Arab Spring's initial uprisings in March 2011, which sparked a proxy war between regional and international forces in the Middle Eastern country. This is the conclusion drawn from a report written by the specialists of the NGO. The war has ruined much of the infrastructure, killed about half a million people, and decimated the economy in little more than a decade.

Among the victims of 2022, there are 1,627 civilians, including 321 children. At least 209 deaths, half of them minors, are linked to anti-personnel mines in the subsoil or live explosives that are scattered across the country. To these are added the 627 deaths among Syrian soldiers and 217 fighters of militias loyal to Damascus.

According to the report, international sanctions and the Caesar Act, which were imposed by the United States, have affected the populace in recent years more than weapons have, making them the targets of unfair collective punishment and "endless suffering" that have detonated the "poverty bomb."

The 2019 Caesar Syria Civilian Protection Act, sometimes referred to as the Caesar Act, is an American legislation that places penalties on the Syrian government, particularly Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, for war crimes committed against the local population.

The Act went into effect on June 17, 2020, after being ratified by then President Donald Trump in December 2019. A variety of Syrian-run businesses are targeted, including those involved in infrastructure, military support, and energy production. The law also targets people and organizations that support or aid the Syrian president.
