SW News: Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the head of Turkey's Islamist-rooted AK Party and the incumbent head of state, was re-elected president on May 28, reinforcing the country's position as a regional military force under his dictatorial control.

His opponent and economist Kemal Kilicdaroglu garnered 47.9 percent of the vote, while Erdogan received 52.1 percent, demonstrating the country's significant division along political lines. Meanwhile, the idea of another five years of his leadership alarmed many critics, who accused him of undermining democracy and aligning the republic towards Islamist ideals.

As a result of the inflation crisis, Erdogan's popularity fell, giving the opposition renewed optimism that it might depose him and modify his policies. He seemed resilient after his victory, despite having to change the nation's attitude toward social, economic, security, and diplomatic challenges.

Erdogan, 69, told supporters in Istanbul from atop a truck that "Turkey is today's only winner." "I am thankful to each and every individual for entrusting us with administering the nation for the next five years," he continued.

Kilicdaroglu, who fought to bring the country closer together politically, said the referendum results demonstrated that people wanted a new form of government. "All of the power of the state was given to one guy," he asserted.

Given Erdogan's tight connection with Russian President Vladimir Putin, who referred to him after the election as a dear friend, Turkey's NATO members are undoubtedly worried about Kilicdaroglu's absence.

Several international leaders, including former US President Donald Trump, as well as leaders from Europe and the Arab world, have sent their congratulations. Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama has congratulated Turkey's newly re-elected President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Despite the challenges, he expressed confidence that Turkey would thrive and contribute significantly to the stability of a world that is growing more linked.
