US slams human rights lawyer Lu Siwei’s forced repatriation from Laos to China

China:
The United States condemned the deportation of a well-known human rights lawyer from Laos to his native China on Wednesday. The US State Department demanded information about his whereabouts and assurances that the ailing activist would have access to medical care. Lu Siwei was one of the lawyers from Hong Kong who tried to escape the city by boat to Taiwan in 2020.
However, Lu was returned to China last month and is likely to face legal ramifications after being arrested by Laotian police in July while traveling to Thailand. His relatives informed Amnesty International that he is currently being held in a jail in Sichuan, southwest China.
US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said, "The United States condemns the forced repatriation of People's Republic of China (PRC) national and human rights lawyer Lu Siwei to the PRC from Laos, at the request of PRC authorities."
Miller requested that the PRC provide confirmation of Lu's whereabouts, permit external verification of his well being, including permission for doctors to treat Lu's ongoing medical condition, and grant him access to a lawyer of his choice.
In 2021, authorities suspended the licences of Lu and another human rights lawyer Ren Quanniu, who also sought to defend the "Hong Kong 12". The Chinese government detained the twelve protesters in 2020 on a ship after they made an unsuccessful attempt to flee to Taiwan. They had previously been arrested by the Hong Kong police.
Following the widespread pro-democracy protests that erupted in Hong Kong in 2019, Beijing has taken action against lawyers who represent pro-democracy activists, in what is seen as an effort to stifle dissent.
Lu was accused of making inappropriate remarks on the internet and seriously damaging the reputation of the legal profession. He called the allegations a cover and that his choice to take on a number of delicate cases had marked his destiny.
