SW News: Bishop Paul Swarbrick, the Catholic Bishops' Conference's Lead Bishop for Africa, has shared his closeness and solidarity with the people of flood-ravaged Libya and quake-hit Morocco while appreciating the efforts of Catholic charities and NGOs for their quick response to the natural disasters that struck the two nations.
An earthquake that hit Morocco on September 8 killed more than 2,900 people; meanwhile, over 11,000 people were reportedly killed by floods in Libya's port city of Derna on September 13 with another 10,000 still missing.
The Catholic Church of England and Wales has also expressed its solidarity with the people of Morocco and Libya. Bishop Swarbrick called for prayers and shared concern for those whose lives have been shattered by these tragedies. He said that communities have been ripped apart, homes have been destroyed, loved ones have been killed or gone missing, and tens of thousands have been displaced across North Africa and beyond. The prelate said they are praying for all of those who are suffering so greatly at this time.
In Libya, storm Daniel triggered the floods. It produced heavy rain that caused two important dams to burst and several bridges to collapse.
In Morocco, the earthquake south of Marrakesh, especially in the isolated towns and villages of the High Atlas Mountains, wreaked havoc. It is believed to be the deadliest in 60 years. Amizmiz, one of the worst-hit locations by the earthquake, and some of the nearby villages are receiving assistance from Caritas Morocco.
Bishop Swarbrick praised the efforts of various NGOs, those who continue to give generously, and the Catholic charities and agencies for their swift response to the crises.
"Caritas Morocco's efforts have been crucial in helping the Moroccan people during this difficult period. Catholic charities from all over the world frequently arrive at scenes of disaster as soon as they can to provide aid to those who are most in need. I want to thank everyone who donates and works for such charities. Continue your generous giving and remember to pray for the people of Libya and Morocco,” Bishop Swarbrick said.
