Rome:

An ANSA-reported circular from Italy's Department of Public Security indicates that the nation is stepping up security measures in anticipation of possible terrorist attacks on New Year's Eve. The ongoing war in Gaza is the cause of rising security concerns as it has raised the risk of jihadist attacks. Concerns exist over eco-activists possibly taking advantage of the event to pull off dramatic antics that would attract media attention. The circular also highlighted the possibility of mass sexual assault incidents, referencing similar events that took place in Piazza del Duomo in Milan two years ago.

Italian authorities are putting strict security measures in place in public squares and other strategic areas to guarantee public safety during New Year's Eve celebrations. These preparations have a larger context than only Italy. According to recent reports, several people in Austria were arrested on suspicion of organizing terrorist attacks against churches in Cologne, Vienna, and Madrid on Christmas Eve. It is thought that these suspects have ties to an Islamist organization. Official confirmation of the arrest of the person linked to these terror plans has not yet been provided by German media outlets.

German police have tightened security measures around the Cologne Cathedral and other important locations in response to recent developments. German Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser highlighted the determination of Europeans to refuse to let terrorists impose restrictions on their way of life. This declaration is part of a larger European commitment to upholding freedom and public safety in the face of terrorist threats.
