Russian Orthodox Church declares abortions as murder, opposing Kremlin

The church's ruling body, the Holy Synod, has reiterated that it is strongly opposed to termination
Moscow:
The Russian Orthodox Church, under the leadership of Patriarch Kirill, has declared that all elective abortions are murder, which is in opposition to the Kremlin's more permissive stance. The church's ruling body, the Holy Synod, has reiterated that it is strongly opposed to termination.
President Putin's position on restricted abortion rights for women in Russia is at odds with the church's opposition to all types of abortion, which it views as murder. To highlight how important it is to safeguard women's rights and liberties, Putin recently vetoed a measure that sought to outlaw private abortion facilities in Russia. In Russia right now, an elective abortion may last up to 12 weeks or, in some cases, up to 22 weeks.
In contrast to the more permissive attitude of the Kremlin toward abortion, the Russian Orthodox Church is supporting the establishment of crisis centers to assist pregnant women who are struggling financially. The church also urged women who have had abortions to seek God's forgiveness through prayer and penance.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced his decision to run for reelection, securing a fifth term in office until 2036. This happens concurrently with the Russian Orthodox Church restating its position. International organizations, however, have voiced concerns over the democratic validity of the Russian elections given that Putin has been in positions of authority since 1999 and has been president since 2012.
Because the government seeks to balance women's rights and freedoms while the church maintains a rigorous moral position, the continuous friction between religious and political authority in Russia is highlighted by the conflict between the Russian Orthodox Church and the Kremlin over abortion.
