SW News: Nuns of a Spanish congregation are reporting a steady stream of conversions and possible miracles through the intercession of a young member of their congregation who died in the 2016 Ecuador earthquake at the age of 33. The biopic based on the life of Sr Clare Crockett, "All or Nothing", which has garnered four million views on YouTube, is inspiring many people across the world, leading to their spiritual conversion. Believers are also seeking her intercession and her congregation says that many people are informing them that their prayers have been answered.
Hailing from Northern Ireland, Sister Crockett’s first biography was published earlier this month and they also contain her spiritual writings which reveal her intense love for Christ. A chain-smoking, party-loving teenager who dreamt of walking the red carpet in Hollywood, Crockett’s free trip to Spain in 2000 at the age of 18 ended up as a pilgrimage. On Good Friday, she underwent a religious experience and felt that she had a vocation to religious life. An encounter with a priest at World Youth Day the same year led her to the Servant Sisters of the Home of the Mother in Spain.
She took the veil and the name of Sr Clare Maria of the Trinity and the Heart of Mary. Her life in the convent was marked by fun and mirth coupled with an intense spiritual quest for the love of Christ. Before embarking on her journey to Ecuador she wrote in her diary, “My heart is Yours, my thoughts are Yours. Ask me anything. Nothing matters now, since nothing I have is mine! Possess me!”
She spread cheer and love wherever she served and was known for her deep piety. On April 16, 2016, Sister Crockett died of multiple injuries after the house she was residing in Riochico, Portoviejo, collapsed in a devastating earthquake. Her mortal remains were flown to Northern Ireland and laid to rest in her native Derry. After the release of the biopic two years later, hundreds of people from around the world started contacting the nuns seeking more details about Sister Crockett.
As her fame spread across the world, the nuns of her congregation were inundated with testimonies of inner healing, conversions and miracles. Spanish religious website Religionenlibertad.com has quoted the nuns as saying that several married couples having difficulty in having children have written to them informing them that Sister Crockett’s intercession helped them get a child. Many couples have named their daughters after her.
Belfast Live, a local media outlet, quoted the deceased nun’s sister Megan Nicell as saying that many believers travel all the way to Derry to pray at her grave. She also said that many people give testimony about how Sr Crockett has interceded for them. Megan also told the channel that “a lot of people have come with stories of IVF and others who could not have children who went up to Clare’s grave and prayed to her, and now they have their babies”.
The Spanish website quoted Sr Kristen of the Servant Sisters of the Home of the Mother as saying that more numerous is the number of spiritual miracles through the intercession of Sister Crockett. “People have come close to committing suicide and have come across the documentary about Sister Clare. They have returned, have enthusiasm and the joy of living. Others were far from the Catholic Church and have found their faith again.”
The nun also testified that many young believers have discerned their call to the priesthood and religious life through the intercession of the nun from Northern Ireland.
In January last year, the congregation announced that it had begun the preliminary preparations to advance the cause of Sister Crockett.
