SW News: Pope Francis appointed Manila Archbishop Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle as the new Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples. The appointment was announced today, December 8.

Tagle replaces Cardinal Fernando Filoni, who had lead the congregation for 8 years. Cardinal Filoni will assume the post of Grand Master of the Order of the Holy Sepulcher.

The Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples was founded by Pope Gregory XV in 1622 to organize missionary work on behalf of the various religious institutions.

Cardinal Tagle has been serving as the president of Caritas International since 2014.

Luis Antonio Tagle was born on June 21, 1957 in Manila and was ordained a priest in 1982. He completed his Doctorate in Sacred Theology at the Catholic University of America in 1991.
