SW News: Pope Francis has reiterated his appeals to the global community to abolish the death penalty. Furthermore, the Holy Father expressed his thoughts on capital punishment while commemorating World Day Against Death Penalty on October 10.

Through a tweet, the pope urged the faithful to mobilize to achieve the abolition of the death penalty across the world. The Holy Father tweeted, "Society can repress crime without definitively depriving those who have committed it of the possibility of redeeming themselves."

His Holiness the pope further sought mobilization to abolish executions by the state worldwide. The Holy Father had expressed his concerns over the death penalty numerous times.

Earlier, for his monthly prayer intention, the pope had invited the faithful to pray "so that the death penalty, which threatens the inviolability and dignity of the person, be abolished in the laws of all the countries of the world."

Separately, for the past two decades, the Coalition Against the Death Penalty, a group fighting against the death penalty, has observed October 10 as the day to abolish the death penalty. Commemorating the day, the group has invited the global community to consider using the death penalty over other punishments. In addition, the group has called on the global community to compare "the relationship between the use of the death penalty and torture or other cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment or punishment." The group also called for a union of political leaders, lawyers, and major authorities to decide on the abolition of the death penalty.
