Argentina authorizes non-prescription sale of contraceptive Morning-After Pill

SW News: The Argentine government agreed on Wednesday, May 31, to authorize the non-prescription sale of emergency hormonal contraception (AHE), also referred to as the "morning-after pill."
The Ministry of Health's Official Gazette rule enables the "free sale" of medications containing 1.5 milligrams of levonorgestrel, the "final hope of contraception" after sexual contact that reduces maternal mortality and morbidity from illegal abortions. Access to all types of contraception is part of sexual and reproductive rights, which are referred to in the texts as vital human rights. The Minister of Health, Carla Vizzotti, said, "The state is dedicated to reducing unwanted births."
Furthermore, "any individual of reproductive age should have immediate and unrestricted access to emergency hormonal contraception (EHA)," with the awareness that this is the only option for preventative measures after sexual activity.
If used within 12 hours after an unprotected interaction, the "morning-after pill" is safe and effective. It may be used up to five days after unprotected intercourse, however, its efficacy fades with time. Patients may get this service for free via healthcare facilities, social assistance organizations, and prepaid plans. It is now OTC, which means that a prescription is no longer required.
The Law of Voluntary and Legal Interruption of Pregnancy in Argentina allows abortions up to 14 weeks of pregnancy; however, women under the age of 13 may only exercise this privilege with the support of a "formal or informal" caregiver.
The ruling states that levonorgestrel, a progestogen approved as an emergency hormonal contraception, is a basic, safe, and effective method of preventing pregnancy.
