SW News: A report presented reveals that at least 529 attacks perpetrated by the dictatorship of Daniel Ortega in the last 5 years, 90 of them committed so far in 2023.

The researcher and lawyer Martha Patricia Molina presented the third installment of her report "Nicaragua: A Persecuted Church?" on May 3.

The document details the hostilities, persecution, siege, desecration, destruction, theft, expulsions, and confiscations perpetrated by the dictatorship.  The report condemns the imprisonment of committed religious and lay leaders of the Church in Nicaragua.

In 2018, the Catholic Church in Nicaragua suffered 84 attacks, 80 in 2019, 59 in 2020, 55 in 2021, 161 in 2022, and 90 so far this year, of which only four months have passed. The figures in 2022 were the highest number in the last five years.

The aggressions include the unjust imprisonment of bishop Rolando Álvarez since February; the expulsion of 32 nuns from the country; the confiscation of 7 Church buildings by the dictatorial regime; and the closure of various media.

The report is broken up into 4 chapters that cover the suppression of 3,176 processions during the most recent Holy Week, the systematization of hostilities, the suppression of hostilities from April 2018 to 2023, and a chronology of desecrations, sacrileges, assaults, robberies, and attacks against the Church.

"In this work, I propose to systematize, show and contribute to the political, cultural, and social history of Nicaragua, facing future and future current generations, in order not to forget the events and decisions of the parties and with the purpose that the study becomes a collection of human lessons, and social and political experiences so that we do not repeat the present mistakes," researcher Molina explains in the document.

Molina said this report outlines an exhaustive study of each hostility and each of the data has been verified.
