SW News: Fr Tomás Sergio Zamora Calderón and Fr William Mora, two Catholic priests from Nicaragua who attended the World Youth Day in Lisbon, Portugal, are unable to return home as the Daniel Ortega dictatorship has prohibited their entry.A Nicaraguan lawyer reported on August 11 that the Sandinista dictatorship prohibited the entry of the priests into national territory. This is the latest incident in which the government is targeting the Church.Meanwhile, the Central American University, which is owned by the Society of Jesus, had its assets frozen by the administration of Daniel Ortega and his wife, Vice President Rosario Murillo.

This action was denounced by a bishop and several social organizations. The auxiliary bishop of Managua, Nicaragua, the Most Rev. Silvio Báez posted on his account on the social network X that as an alumnus of the Central American University of Managua, he repudiates the dictatorship's aggression against this study center.Bishop Báez, who has been in exile in the United States since April 2019 as a result of government repression, claimed that the freezing of accounts is an attack on higher education, intellectual freedom, culture, and the whole of society. On Wednesday, the Ortega government froze UCA's bank accounts.

Six student groups also condemned what they consider an outrage and a direct attack on education and intellectual freedom.“These baseless actions, based on alleged accusations of money laundering and terrorist financing, lack foundation and are part of a strategy to suppress dissent and silence critical voices," the signatory groups criticized in a statement.

They said it is a violation of Article 125 of the Political Constitution of the Republic of Nicaragua, which enshrines the protection of the rights of university educational communities and other centers of higher technical education.
