Religious restrictions increasing around the world: Pew survey

SW News: China continues to be the most restrictive government on the planet when it comes to religious liberty. That’s the finding of new research published by the U.S.-based think tank, the Pew Research Institute. On November 10, they published their annual Government Restrictions Index or GRI, which ranks countries according to how restrictive their governments are when it comes to religious freedom. Out of the 198 countries and territories contained within the study, China is top of the list with a GRI score of 9.3 out of 10. The GRI rankings were first published in 2010. The latest figures take in the year 2018, which Pew found to contain the decade’s highest global median level of government restrictions on religion. The figures also suggest that when it comes to religious liberty, authoritarian governments are the worst offenders while the Middle East and North Africa the worst regions.
