SW News: In March, investigators supported by the United Nations produced a report stating that a number of South Sudanese authorities are responsible for serious human rights violations and should be brought to justice. However, none of the individuals named in the report were held accountable for their crimes.
The commission summarized the results of the investigation it had conducted in six South Sudanese states over the previous year.
According to Yasmin Sooka, head of the committee, "Over multiple years, our findings have repeatedly revealed that impunity for significant crimes is a fundamental source of violence and suffering suffered by people in South Sudan."
She emphasized that action was taken to identify additional offenders who should be subject to criminal investigation and punishment for their participation in unacceptable breaches of human rights.
The Commission on Human Rights in South Sudan accused government and military leaders, including Unity State Governor Joseph Monytuil, of grave human rights breaches in its findings.
Lieutenant General Thoi Chany Reat of the South Sudan People's Defense Forces, according to the research, should be probed for his participation in the state-sanctioned extrajudicial executions that occurred in Mayom County in August 2022. Furthermore, Koch County Commissioner Gordon Koang is accused of abusing Leer residents between February and April 2022.
It further said that greater inquiry into the actions of other high officials in the states of Warrap, Upper Nile, Jonglei, and Equatoria is required.
