SW News: Pro-life outfits in America filed a lawsuit seeking the repeal of regulators’ endorsement of the medical abortion drug mifepristone. If they win the lawsuit, then it could scuttle access to this drug across the United States.

The Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine, the American Association of Pro-Life Obstetricians and Gynecologists and other outfits filed the lawsuit at the federal court in Amarillo, Texas. In the lawsuit, they alleged that the Food and Drug Administration did not have the mandate to approve abortion medication when it did so in 2000. They also accused the FDA of not assessing the risk for minors adequately.

The FDA "failed America's women and girls when it chose politics over science and approved chemical abortion drugs for use in the United States," the plaintiffs argued.

Earlier this year, the administration had taken the step to expand access to medication abortion when the Supreme Court of the country overturned Roe v Wade.

Endorsed by the FDA, mifepristone is a prescription drug that induces abortion up to 10 weeks into a pregnancy. After it is administered, it is followed by a second drug named misoprostol.

The complainants argued that the Food and Drug Administration approved the use of mifepristone in an improper manner in 2000 under an expedited process. This was aimed at permitting patients to have quicker access to better treatments for an illness.

The June 24 Supreme Court verdict brought medication abortion under the scanner. It is responsible for more than half of the abortions in the United States.
