SW News: The funeral services of Bishop David O’Connell, the auxiliary of Los Angeles, who was shot dead in the past week will be held on March 3.
The ceremonies will commence on Thursday, March 2, with public viewing hours from 10am to 12pm and from 1pm to 6pm at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels. Prior to these hours, there would also be a solemn reception of the body and family viewing which would be a private event, open only to family members.
After the viewing hours on Thursday, a Vigil Mass will be celebrated for Bishop O’Connell at 7pm at the same Cathedral. According to the website of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, the funeral Mass has been scheduled for 11am on the following day.
A Memorial Mass has been organized on March 1, by the San Gabriel Pastoral region at St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Hacienda Height, the home of the late Bishop O’Connell.
The police arrested the suspect, Carlos Medina, husband of Bishop O’Connell’s housekeeper on Feb 20. The LA prosecutor George Gascón revealed details of the murder at a press conference on Wednesday, Feb 23. The police haven’t revealed an official motive for the murder since the accused gave “several different reasons” and “none of them made sense to any of the investigators”.
David Gerard O'Connell, born in Ireland, was made an auxiliary bishop of the Los Angeles archdiocese by Pope Francis in 2015.
