SW News: The state that successfully argued for the right to enact pro-life legislation before the Supreme Court in the Dobbs case is increasing its commitment to mothers, dads, and children with a new set of pro-life laws.
Governor of Mississippi Tate Reeves has inked into law eight pro-life safety net laws that would help mothers, unborn babies, foster children, and the adoption procedure.
The Republican governor signed into law eight anti-abortion measures on Wednesday, April 19, continuing their pro-life agenda after the reversal of Roe v Wade. Under the new regulations, adoption and foster care will be improved, which will also create and enhance support networks for new moms and their infants. Reeves added that the new legislations are a component of Mississippi's "New Pro-life Agenda" in a press release.
During the signing ceremony, the governor said, "Mississippi has moved to the next phase in our pursuit to build a culture of life. That phase is the new pro-life agenda. This next phase will not be easy, and it will not be free. But it is the right thing to do."
The governor has signed five legislations including one on tax breaks for adoptive parents that are related to adoption and foster care. The other bills assist moms and children both before and after birth.
One law will double the tax credit available to anti-abortion clinics and pregnancy resource centers, and another measure will establish a state-run website that lists anti-abortion options. In addition, under a 'baby drop-off law,' a mother will have more time to give her child up to a haven location.
Adoption, foster care, and Child Protection Services were topics covered under the other five bills. In addition, under HB 510, foster parents shall receive a Foster Parents' Bill of Rights and Responsibilities at a foster parent training.
The Department of Child Protection Services is a new state agency created by the 'Path to Permanency' bill to help children subjected to abuse or neglect. Reeves also authorized funds for the new department in an appropriations bill.
The 'Foster Care and Adoption Task Force' was created under SB 2384, and its purpose is to review the state's adoption and foster care laws and suggest amendments.
For children adopted from outside Mississippi, SB 2696 permits a tax credit of up to $5,000, while for children adopted within Mississippi; it permits a credit of up to $10,000.
Pro-life advocates have welcomed the legislation while pro-abortion supporters have decried it.
