SW News:
Believers in Canada’s Toronto Archdiocese, the largest diocese in the country, are rejoicing as the Holy Father has appointed their auxiliary Bishop Frank Leo as the new archbishop. He will succeed Cardinal Thomas Collins, who turned 76 last month.
The archbishop-elect was named the auxiliary of Montreal on July 16, 2022. He received episcopal consecration on September 12 of the same year and was assigned the titular see of Tamada. As the successor of Cardinal Collins, he will be the shepherd of about two million souls, which is almost a third of the population of Montreal. He will also be the local ordinary of one of the most diverse communities in the continent as Holy Mass is offered in more than 30 languages in 225 parishes.
Born on June 30, 1971, he bagged a baccalaureate in philosophy from the Institut de Formation Theologique de Montreal linked to the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome and a doctorate in theology at the Marian Research Institute affiliated to the Marianum in the University of Dayton in Ohio. He was ordained a priest on December 14, 1996, and he served in several capacities as vicar, school chaplain, and teacher of religion at the College Reine Marie.
He did his higher studies in Rome from 2006 to 2008 in Canon Law and philosophy. After bagging a licentiate in historical critical philosophy, he joined the diplomatic service of the Holy See. He was first posted in Australia in 2008 and after three years, at the Holy See Study Mission in Hong Kong. In 2012, he returned to his archdiocese as director and teacher of dogmatics in the Major Seminary. The archbishop-elect also served as the vice president of the diocesan vocations service and was a member of the presbyteral council from 2013 to 2015. He is credited with establishing the Canadian Mariological Society in 2013 and he is serving as its current president.
Fr Leo became the secretary general of the Canadian Conference of Catholic bishops in 2015. He was appointed vicar general and moderator of the archdiocesan curia in 2021.
