Termination of American biology professor over traditional gender definition sparks legal battle

SW News: Johnson Varkey served as an adjunct professor and taught human anatomy and physiology at St. Philip's in San Antonio, Texas, for the past 20 years.
The controversy began on November 28 last year after four students walked out of his class when he was teaching sex was determined by chromosomes X and Y and reproduction involves a male and a female to continue the human species.
According to a letter from his legal counsel First Liberty Institute, Varkey received a letter from the university informing him about an investigation due to an ethics violation complaint against him. However, at the end of the month, he was terminated from his job, stating that they received reports of "religious preaching, discriminatory comments about homosexuals and transgender individuals, anti-abortion rhetoric, and misogynistic banter."
However, the law firm that defends religious freedom denies these allegations, saying that the professor followed a school-approved and science-based curriculum and did not express his personal opinions.
First Liberty claimed that Varkey's lessons were supported by his training, professional experience, and religious convictions. Still, throughout his teaching period, he never shared his personal opinions on religion or concerning human gender or sexuality with any of the students.
According to the law firm, the college violates the First Amendment and Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 by engaging in illegal religious employment discrimination.
Similarly, Dr. David Mackereth, a British Christian doctor, was fired for refusing to use transgender pronouns in the emergency room, claiming it was a matter of honesty and faith. The legal fight over the same is going on.
