SW News: In the aftermath of the US Supreme Court verdict overturning Roe v. Wade in June, at least 66 clinics in 15 American states have stopped providing abortion to their clients, said a study conducted by the Guttmacher Institute, an NGO based in the US that works to improve sexual and reproductive health and rights worldwide.

According to the report, published on Thursday, 14 states nevermore operate any clinics for providing abortions since October 2, which was the 100th day since the court’s historic verdict overturning Roe V Wade. The decision of the top court took away the legal status of abortion nationwide, leaving individual states to decide whether or not to ban abortion.

After the enactment of the law on June 24, the number of clinics offering abortion dropped from 79 to 13. Among the 66 clinics where abortion has stopped completely, 40 clinics still provide other gynecological services.
The maximum number of clinic closures was reported in the states of Texas and Louisiana. In Texas alone, 12 out of 23 clinics were closed and three ceased operations in Louisiana.

In the state of Georgia, abortion is banned only after six weeks when a fetal heartbeat is detected. After the repeal of Roe v Wade, several states in America have passed laws or drafted bills to ban abortion in several stages of pregnancy.
