US snowboarding coach fired for criticizing gender policy files lawsuit against school board

SW News: A former high school coach in the American state of Vermont is suing the school district after he was fired for saying that biological males should not take part in sports events meant for girls. A devout Catholic, David Bloch was serving as the snowboarding coach at Woodstock Union High School when his contract was terminated in February.
This made him file a lawsuit in the US District Court in Vermont and the hearing is slated for September 25. Bloch said that he engaged in a short conversation with students before a match regarding the participation of biological males in girls’ sports. This took place when his team was about to compete against another team in which one of the players was a man who identified as a woman.
Bloch is represented in court by the Alliance Defending Freedom, which is a legal group that takes up religious freedom cases before the US Supreme Court. The defendants in the lawsuit include interim secretary of the Vermont Agency of Education Heather Bouchey, executive director of the Vermont Principals’ Association Jay Nichols, and superintendent of Windsor Central Supervisory Union Sherry Sousa.
In the lawsuit, Bloch argues that there are only two biological sexes. He said it was a “matter of biology, males and females have different DNA. And that biological differences generally give males competitive advantages in athletic events.” On the same day, Sousa fired the snowboarding coach citing alleged violations of the anti-harassment policies of the Windsor Central Supervisory Union.
He also explained that his conversation was respectful among all parties and it lasted just three minutes and it was in the absence of the snowboarder with gender dysphoria. According to ADF Legal Counsel Matthew Hoffmann, "Public schools can't fire employees for respectful speech on a matter of public concern. Not only was what Coach Bloch said completely true and consistent with science but it was protected speech under the First Amendment."
