US Bishops' Domestic Policy Committee urges strong support for working families

SW News: The chairman of the United States Bishops' Domestic Policy Committee released a statement for Labor Day 2023 emphasizing the country's urgent need to demonstrate a strong commitment to working families and give continued assistance for the welfare of all families.
Archbishop Borys Gudziak of the Ukrainian Archeparchy of Philadelphia emphasized both good and troubling economic trends in an August 30 statement published by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops ahead of Labor Day on September 4.
According to the bishops' statement, even if there are indications of economic progress, inflation has made it more difficult for people to save money. Furthermore, the worrisome rise in the expenses of basics such as food, housing, and medical care is a big source of concern.
According to the bishops, the objective of the economy, as mentioned, is to enable the flourishing of families. Meanwhile, in their statement, they noted the Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church, a text underlining the need to encourage employment policies that assist rather than damage families. In addition, Archbishop Gudziak has issued a strong call to action, imploring people from all walks of life to answer the Lord's call and provide a helping hand to those in need.
The bishop noted that rent has grown even more costly, worsening the problem. Furthermore, he raised alarm about the growing expense of healthcare, claiming that it is becoming increasingly out of reach for a large percentage of people.
In a strong show of solidarity, the bishops advocated for the nationwide adoption of complete paid family leave regulations as well as more government help for families who chose to care for their children at home. Also, the bishops have underlined the need to improve access to low-cost, high-quality child care and prekindergarten programs.
The United States Bishops concluded their statement by reminding Christians that we all have a responsibility to serve the Lord and spread the gospel to the poor, and they also emphasized the importance of carefully listening to the Lord's words, who brings forth good news as we follow his teachings on a daily basis.
