USA’s Chicago witnesses shooting of 34 people last weekend

SW News: In what was seen as a series of senseless acts of violence, USA’s Chicago witnessed 34 people being shot during the weekend and one of them, a three-year-boy, succumbed to bullet injuries. It was on Friday that the child was killed while he was riding in a car along with his mom and three siblings.
The series of attacks exposed the dark and dirty side of the city. Chicago Police Deputy Chief Larry Snelling said that he has seen children shot across this city in ridiculous numbers. “When did we become a society where we stop caring about the children?” he remarked. In what appears to be an incident of road rage, the boy, Mateo Zastro, was killed at 8.30 pm. His devastated mother is clutching onto two toy dinosaurs, the boy’s favorite toys, say media reports. "It wasn’t necessary to do what you did. You followed my path home. I was not following you," his mother Veronica Zastro told the media.
She demanded whoever shot the child turn themselves in. Mateo's siblings were in the car during the time of his death. "They were in the backseat when their baby brother dropped to the floor..." she recalled.
“We will not rest until those responsible for this senseless and cowardly act of violence are brought to justice. The mother attempted to leave from the other vehicle when the offender subsequently followed her. Several shots were fired,” said the 8th District Commander Bryan Spreyne.
In another tragic incident, an unidentified 7-year-old was shot in the leg while heading to church on Sunday with his family. A family member saw a person going through his parked car and confronted him before shooting at them. According to local reports, the suspect was caught.
Chicago has an unfortunate history of gun violence arising from the rise of gangs in the 1920s and continuing to the present day. The city cannot break away from its dark past. While Chicago is safe for most residents, gun violence is still a major concern.
