SW News: The National Mall in downtown Washington DC witnessed a sea of pro-life supporters on January 20 who had assembled there to take part in the annual March for Life. It was the first rally to be held after the United States Supreme Court repealed Roe v. Wade which legalized abortion across the country in 1973.
Participants of the march expressed joy over the overturning of Roe v Wade and it was evident from the placards that read “We Are The Post-Roe Generation”. There were also chants such as “Hey hey, ho ho, abortion has got to go,” which was in contrast with the chant "Roe v. Wade has got to go” that was heard until last year.
However, pro-life activists expressed concern over the fact that abortions are still being carried out in the United States. Organizers of the march pledged to undertake the event every year until abortions are totally banned in all states. “While this year marks our most significant victory, the human rights abuse of abortion is far from over," said Jeanne Mancini, president of the March for Life Education and Defense Fund, while addressing the gathering. "We will continue to march until the human rights abuse of abortion is a thing of the past.”
Pro-life activists are also urging congressional members to curb the termination of pregnancy at the federal level. During the rally, one could also spot the presence of lawmakers from the Republican Party. House Majority Leader Steve Scalise said, “You are showing us and giving us hope that the young people of America support life, defend life, are here to march for life.”
According to Rep. Chris Smith, co-chair of the Congressional Pro-Life Caucus, “Future generations will someday look back on us and wonder how and why a society that bragged about its commitment to human rights could have legally sanctioned and aggressively promoted child beheadings, dismemberment, chemical poisoning and forced expulsion from the womb.”
Before the march took place House Speaker Kevin McCarthy said on Twitter that he supported the pro-life rally. “Last week, we passed legislation providing medical care for babies born alive during abortions,” he said. He was citing the GOP measure to penalize doctors who don’t provide such care. He added by saying, “You now have a Congress that is standing up for life.”
It was in June last year that the US Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade in a 5-4 decision fifty years after the epoch-making ruling. Soon after the verdict, several states hurried to prohibit abortions while some other states imposed different types of restrictions.
