St Joseph’s primary school in Qaraqosh which was seized by the Islamic state in 2014 has reopened and welcomed back 130 students into class. Following an invasion by Islamic State militants in 2014, thousands of children were forced to flee from the town of Qaraqosh with their families. Meanwhile, the IS militants transformed the school into a military base. The city was liberated in 2016. Open Doors and many other Christian charitable organizations helped to reconstruct the Christian primary school. The school hopes to expand and admit secondary school students next year. Qaraqosh has the largest Christian population in the Nineveh Plains.
