SW News: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday said that the Knesset "will not advance any law against the Christian community" after receiving a massive backlash from the Christian community regarding a proposed legislation by two Ultra-Orthodox Jewish MPs making it illegal to evangelize in Jesus' birth land.

Two Knesset members proposed legislation that would ban any efforts to preach Jesus, in the land where he was born. Under the proposed legislation, anyone who directly, digitally, via direct mail, or online persuades a person to convert his religion will be sentenced to one year. However, if the person is a minor (under 18), the persuader will be imprisoned for two years. The bill was crafted by Moshe Gafni, and Yaakov Asher.

The bill makes it unlawful to create and distribute online movies that instruct Jews or Muslims in Israel on the Bible. In addition, according to the news source, the proposed rule would make it unlawful to publish "books, other printed literature, internet articles, podcasts, or other kinds of media that explain the life and work of Jesus and his message found in the New Testament."

This law would apply to individuals conducting spiritual discussions with Israeli citizens of any religion. However, in their official explanation of the bill, the two Israeli lawmakers highlighted the warning to stop Christians in particular.

So, it appeared that the legislation's main goal was to make it unlawful for followers of Jesus to share their reasons for thinking that He was both the Messiah and God in the hopes that Israelis would join them.

This led to a vast backfire from the Christian community in the nation, following which the Prime Minister tweeted that there won't be any such legislation.

Gafni later stated that he proposed the bill just as a procedure and has no plans to advance it.
