Myanmar’s ousted leader Aung San Suu Kyi’s prison term reduced to 27 years

SW News: The former leader of Myanmar Aung San Suu Kyi has had five of the 19 charges made against her dismissed. The pardon, which is part of a seasonal amnesty, will reduce her 33-year prison term by six years.
Former president Win Myint also obtained a reduced jail term after having two of his charges dropped. The junta overthrew him along with Suu Kyi.
Suu Kyi and Myint were not previously included in periodic amnesties that have been announced before. The military junta has made other concessions to restart diplomatic operations.
Last week, Suu Kyi was transferred from prison to house detention in the nation's capital, Nay Pyi Taw.
The military imprisoned her since the coup that toppled the 78-year-old Nobel laureate in February 2021
The coup has claimed thousands of lives. The military junta has additionally been charged with using excessive violence against people who disagree with its rule. China and Thailand have initiated talks with the junta, but critics say that they left out Suu Kyi's party, which won a resounding victory in the 2020 elections.
The military claimed electoral fraud as a result of the size of the victory, which they then used as grounds for the coup. Suu Kyi would almost probably need to participate in any negotiations for a settlement with the international community. However, ever since her detention following the coup, she has been kept in isolation. Almost two years had passed since there had been any news about her condition.
Suu Kyi challenged the convictions for the other counts, which include election fraud and corruption. She was accused of everything, which she has refuted, in military-run tribunals that were conducted behind closed doors. Rights groups have called the court cases as fraud. Following its coup two years ago, the military junta on Monday postponed an election that was supposed to take place by August of this year.
