National Human Rights Commission demands details on efforts to restore calm in volatile Manipur

The Commission has precisely recorded 18 episodes of violence in Manipur that are inextricably related to human rights breaches in recent months.
Manipur:
The National Human Rights Commission has sent notices to the Center, the Manipur government, and the state's police superintendent, demanding details on the efforts being made to restore calm in the volatile state.
According to their account, the NHRC received Action Taken Reports (ATRs) from the Manipur administration in response to previous complaints detailing various incidents of violence. Officials noted that ATRs were sought on a range of issues throughout a four-week period.
The Commission said that many steps had been taken because of the violence in the state. It also said that it had sent notices to the secretary of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, the chief secretary, and the director general of police for the government of Manipur, asking them to send in ATRs after carefully considering a number of factors.
Because the concerns were similar, in its procedures dated August 30, 2023, and September 12, 2023, the Commission used an identical questionnaire to collect reports from the responsible authorities. Except for eight cases, everyone has gotten responses and reminders.
Since May 3, ethnic confrontations in Manipur have occurred between the dominant Meitei group, which resides in the Imphal valley, and the Kukis, who live in the hills. As a result, the NHRC recommends that peace-building measures for warring communities be coordinated.
The National Disaster Management Authority requires the state government to provide basic sanitation and trash disposal, as well as water for drinking, heating, bathing, and nutritious food, according to the NHRC.
The rights organization proposed maintaining health and mental health services, organizing health professional visits to places, and eliminating pharmaceutical shortages.
