SW News: Pope Francis has once more appealed to the international community to support flood-hit Libya, saying the suffering people need unwavering support. After his Wednesday General Audience, the Pope addressed a group of Italian-speaking pilgrims, saying, "My thoughts go to the people of Libya, hard hit by violent rains that have caused flooding and inundation, causing numerous deaths and injuries, as well as extensive damage." The Holy Father prayed for the deceased, their loved ones, and those who had been forced to flee their homes.
Reuters reported more than 5,300 confirmed deaths and the death toll is expected to rise. The flood was caused by the storm Daniel, which let out a torrent of water that destroyed up to 25% of the Mediterranean city of Derna and swept away both houses and people.
Authorities worry that 10,000 more people are still missing, either carried away by the water or buried beneath the ruins of the city, which formerly had more than 100,000 residents.
The International Organisation for Migration in Libya estimates that over 30,000 people have been displaced as a result of the flooding in Derna. According to CNN, some of the damaged communities are unreachable to humanitarian agencies due to the substantial infrastructure damage in the area.
Only two of Derna's seven entrances are now open.
Authorities are searching through piles of debris for survivors. The destruction caused by Storm Daniel has made it far more challenging for rescuers to clear the roads and debris to look for survivors. Communication breakdowns caused by the storm complicated search and rescue operations and worried family members.
The Pope sent a telegram to Archbishop Savio Hon Tai-Fai, the Apostolic Nuncio to Libya, on Tuesday conveying his condolences on behalf of the Libyans. The Holy Father expressed his grief over the immense loss of life and destruction.
He conveyed his heartfelt spiritual closeness to those who were hurt, those who were worried about missing family members, and the rescue and relief workers. Pope Francis prayed for heavenly graces of solace, fortitude, and endurance for everyone impacted by the tragedy.
