South Korea’s Catholic population grows by 50% in 20 years

SW News: According to a study conducted by the Catholic Pastoral Institute of Korea , the population of Catholics in South Korea has grown by 48.6 percent since 1999.

The number of priests increased by almost 1500 in the same time frame. South Korean missionaries serving overseas has increased by 52.2 % over the past two decades.

Christianity is now the largest religion in South Korea.

5.8 million Catholics make up 11.1 % of South Korea’s total population.

In 2014, Pope Francis visited South Korea. During his visit, the Holy Father beatified 124 Korean Catholic martyrs.
