SW News: The UN Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights Nada-Al Nashif urged Sri Lankan authorities to speed up their investigations and prosecutions of human rights breaches, particularly with regard to the Easter Sunday 2019 explosions, during an event in Geneva.

Following repeated appeals for Sri Lanka to undertake an impartial inquiry into the bombing spree that killed 269 people and wounded 500 more, Al-Nashif stressed that investigations must follow international human rights norms. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka's president Ranil Wickremesinghe declared on Sunday that he would form a panel chaired by a Supreme Court judge to look into a British television's accusation that the intelligence agency was involved in the Easter Sunday explosions.

The president's administration declared that the main goal of the committee was to examine the severe claims made by Channel 4 in a televised video, which stoked the flames. According to a man questioned by Channel 4, he arranged a meeting between the Islamic State-inspired National Thowheed Jamath and a high-ranking state intelligence officer loyal to former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa in order to foment strife ahead of the 2019 presidential election.

However, Rajapaksa has denied the claims leveled against him, claiming that the idea of a gang of Islamic fanatics plotting suicide strikes in order to secure his presidency is preposterous.

On April 21, 2019, three churches and three luxury hotels in Colombo were targeted by suicide bombers. It happened on Easter Sunday and resulted in widespread devastation and countless casualties.
