SW News: On May 1, the Italian bishops will commit the country to the hands of Mother Mary for protection amidst the covid-19 pandemic.

The event will take place at the Basilica of Santa Maria del Fonte near Caravaggio.

Cardinal Gualtiero Bassetti, president of the Italian Episcopal Conference, said that he took this decision in response to the requests from the faithful.

"The shepherds have the task of leading their flock, the Christian people, but often it is the Christian people who push the shepherds, as has happened in this case," Cardinal Gualtiero Bassetti said in a video message.

The cardinal said that he received more than three hundred letters full of love and devotion to the Virgin Mary.

The Basilica of Santa Maria del Fonte is located in Italy’s Lombardy region. More than 1,80,000 COVID-19 cases have been reported in Italy.
