France :
Authorities in France are decrying the Stars of David sprayed on the facades of several buildings in Paris in a display of antisemitism reminiscent of the dark times of the 1930s. On Monday night, about 60 Stars of David were painted on walls in Paris' 14th arrondissement, increasing the feeling of fear among the French Jews.
The symbols painted in blue, similar to the Israeli flag, were discovered sprayed onto buildings across parts of the French capital. Authorities declared they would begin looking into property damage cases made worse by discriminatory intent.
Carine Petit, Mayor of Paris's 14th arrondissement, condemned the stars as anti-Semitic and racist acts."This act of marking is reminiscent of the methods used in the 1930s and the Second World War, which led to the extermination of millions of Jews," she said in a statement.
The deputy to the Paris Mayor declared that the stars would be taken down and an investigation would be initiated. French Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne denounced disgraceful acts. She further vowed a ‘merciless fight’ against the surging antisemitism.
According to local authorities, similar graffiti was also found in Parisian suburbs, including Vanves, Fontenay-aux-Roses, Aubervilliers and Saint-Ouen. Reports said the stars were sometimes accompanied by inscriptions such as "from the river to the sea, Palestine will win.”
With over 500,000 Jews living there, France is home to the greatest Jewish community in Europe. Since Hamas's attack on October 7, there has been a noticeable rise in antisemitic incidents in the country. According to Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin, since the commencement of the conflict, there have been over 850 reports of analogous crimes in France. At least 400 arrests have been made in connection with antisemitic incidents in the country since October 7.
