Irish bishops: “Keep Christ at the centre of Christmas"
News Desk

SW News: Archbishop Eamon and Bishop Michael reminded the faithful of the Archdiocese of Armagh, to keep Christ at the centre of Christmas, in a pastoral message on December 4, 2020, published on the official website of the Archdiocese of Armagh.
The bishops in their message acknowledged that it will be impossible for the usual large gatherings to assemble for Mass on Christmas eve and Christmas day, due to the pandemic. However, they pointed out that “Christmas is about more than just one day.” They encouraged the faithful to attend Mass at any day during the twelve days from Christmas eve to the Feast of Epiphany. Christmas Masses will be live-streamed and the faithful are encouraged to “tune in” from their “domestic churches” of their living rooms. “Although it may not be possible for all who wish to go to Confession to safely avail of the sacrament at this time, we encourage you to take a moment to place your trust in God’s mercy through an Act of Perfect Contrition,” stated the bishops.
Even in these challenging times, “It is possible to experience the spiritual richness of this special season in many ways,” affirmed the bishops. The individual households are prompted to become “little churches” who invite in baby Jesus and the families are called to pray especially for those affected by the pandemic.
The bishops motivated the faithful to bring the hope of advent to those who are “sick, isolated, lonely or poor.” “A simple act of kindness can make such a difference,” they noted. The bishops suggested making contributions to the various charitable organizations during these times.
They requested special prayers for “those whose livelihoods have been seriously threatened by the pandemic.”
The bishops reminded the faithful that the restrictions brought about by the pandemic, has created opportunities for prayer, reflection, family time, and “space to enter into the true meaning of Christmas.”
The bishops extended their gratitude to all the priests, parish teams and helpers who are working hard so that the faithful can gather for worship in a safe manner. They also thanked all the faithful for cooperating with “health workers and other carers by strictly observing public health advice” and advised them to continue to do the same.
“Stay Safe and Pray Safe so that the New Year 2021 will see an end to the pandemic,” concluded the bishops.
