SW News: Britain paid tribute to murdered veteran Catholic MP Sir David Amess who was laid to rest on Tuesday, November 23, after a funeral service in Westminster Cathedral. Cardinal Vincent Nichols of Westminster, who is also the head of the bishops’ conference of England and Wales, offered the requiem Mass during which the message of Pope Francis was read out.
On the previous day, there was an ecumenical service for the soul of the veteran politician, who was fatally stabbed on October 15 by a Briton of Somali extract. The prayer service was held at St. Mary's Church in Southend. Hundreds lined the streets to pay homage to Sir Amess as the flag-draped casket containing his mortal remains were taken in a horse-drawn hearse. Reverend Paul Mackay and Monsignor Kevin William Hale presided over the service.
In a statement read out by the former Conservative MP Ann Widdecombe, the politician’s family said, "We are enormously proud of him, our hearts are shattered, however, there was still so much David wanted to do so this is not the end of Sir David Amess MP, it is the next chapter."
A devout Catholic and staunch opponent of abortion, Sir David was stabbed to death while having a constituency meeting at Belfairs Methodist Church in Leigh-on-Sea on October 15.
