A bill in Russia curbing almost all gender realignment procedures has been given the assent by most members of the Federation Council on Wednesday. The bill, which was given the green signal by the Duma last week, mandates that change of gender can be allowed with medical supervision only in rare cases.

The bill states that gender reassignment is possible only if children are afflicted with physiological abnormalities from birth. But even then, sex change procedures can be initiated only with the permission of a medical commission. 

There are other provisions in the bill that state that a marriage can be declared null and void should one of the spouses alter his or her gender. Those who switch genders will also not be able to adopt a child, as per the bill, which becomes law once President Vladimir Putin affixes his signature to it. 

According to the bill, if any Russian national alters his gender abroad, he or she will not be allowed to make any amendments to the gender mentioned in official documents. 

Russia has always been vocal about its opposition to the homosexual agenda. In November 2022, the Kremlin prohibited all forms of gay publicity. The distribution of information on all sorts of homosexual behavior can no longer be distributed. It has also ensured that information on gender change procedures has vanished from the public sphere. 

The homosexual agenda and members of the LGBT community have been portrayed by Russian authorities as symbols of Western degeneration. 
When it was passed by the Duma, deputy chair Petr Tolstoy said, "We preserve Russia for posterity, with its cultural and family values, traditional foundations, putting up a barrier to the penetration of Western anti-family ideology."
