Kyiv:

For the first time this year, the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church observed Christmas on December 25 following the Western or Gregorian calendar. Major Archbishop Sviatoslav Shevchuk, the Head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC) stressed the importance of Christ's birth and its relevance to the current state of affairs in Ukraine during his sermon at the Patriarchal Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ in Kyiv.

He emphasized the story of the three Magi, who traveled from the center of civilization to the little hamlet of Bethlehem to adore the infant King. Their presents served as a sign of their acceptance of Jesus as God and King. Invaders had historically sprung from the same area as the wise men, but on the day of Christ's birth, they came to honor Him, according to the Major Archbishop. The religious figure went on to say that Jesus' stable birth became the focal point of the whole universe.

The Primate also discussed the idea of hope that the birth of Jesus conveys, particularly during trying times. Similarly, a Ukrainian child's birth is a message of hope for the future of the globe, he said, citing the millions of women and children who have been uprooted from their country.

The Major Archbishop wished the Ukrainian community worldwide a happy Christmas and conveyed his particular concern for the people in Crimea and the seized areas. He exhorted believers to spread the joy of the occasion to others and to use the Christmas mystery and God's presence among all to bring youngsters to the Christian faith.

The Archbishop wished everyone a happy Christmas season and urged them to use the songs they sing as a means of expressing their faith and optimism. Meanwhile, on Christmas Eve, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized that all Ukrainians are celebrating as one nation while sending a message of hope and unity.
