SW News: At the 52nd session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva, the Vatican voiced its concern for people who are persecuted due to their religion and urged all nations to defend the right to profess religion without fear of punishment.

As the Holy See's representative, Archbishop Fortunatus Nwachukwu brought attention to the plight of the numerous persecuted individuals and groups around the world as the Council members convened their session.

The Archbishop, echoing Pope Francis, said that religious freedom must be recognized globally if there is to be sustainable peace. Although he conceded that religious freedom is constrained in many places, he expressed worry that people are being penalized for expressing their views publicly.

"Religious minorities in several countries across the globe have been subject to oppressive tactics and abuses," including by government officials, he said. Archbishop Nwachukwu said Christians are routinely denied the freedom to express and practice their religion, even if it does not harm others.

According to certain figures, one out of every seven Christians is persecuted around the globe, claimed the archbishop. It should not be forgotten that Christians are persecuted in majority-Christian countries as well. When believers' engagement in society is curtailed in the name of misguided inclusiveness, religious freedom is likewise at risk.

He asserted that the freedom to freely practice one's religion is also in jeopardy if believers' ability to voice their opinions in public is restricted in the name of misplaced tolerance.

"Religious freedom, which cannot be limited to freedom of worship alone, is one of the most important requirements for a dignified life," he remarked. Governments must defend this freedom and guarantee that everyone, in line with the common good, may act in accordance with their conscience in all aspects of life, including public and professional life.

He concluded by mentioning Pope Francis once again and emphasizing that "we cannot deny the reality that violence and hatred against Christians are also increasing in majority-Christian nations."
