Vatican prosecutes radical green activists who vandalized priceless statue

SW News: The Vatican City court is prosecuting a group of radical climate activists who vandalized the base of an ancient statue in the Vatican museums. It was in August last year that Guido Viero and Ester Goffi affixed their hands to the base of the iconic Laocoon and His Sons statue using super glue. The duo also pasted QR codes for access to their activist literature to the pedestal using glue.
The act of 61-year-old Viero and 26-year-old Goffi was filmed by another individual named Laura and she too has been indicted by Vatican police. They are all members of the Last Generation global climate activist group which is known for defacing ancient artworks and disrupting peace to push forward their agenda that borders on anarchism.
According to the radical climate outfit both Viero and Goffi have been slapped with three years in prison and a fine of more than 3,000 euros. The duo has appealed to the Vatican authorities and the Holy Father himself for clemency, explaining that the aim was not to damage the ancient statue dating back to antiquity but to invite attention to the aftermath of climate change that is being felt around the world.
The attack on the statue in the Vatican Museum is not an isolated incident. In fact, rabid climate activists have inflicted harm on works of art elsewhere. For instance, they vandalized a work of art near the German parliament during the weekend. Those belonging to The Last Generation poured black liquid on a series of glass plates that show the 19 articles of the nation’s constitution. They then posted posters on the façade that read "Oil or fundamental rights?" in German.
